Internet Protocol
Internet Protocol is what makes the Internet ability to function. We will take a quick look of what it does, along with problems caused while using the protocol.
Internet Protocol is the method by which data is sent from one computer to another over the Internet. Each computer on the Internet has a unique address known as a IP address. When you send or receive data on the internet, it is broken up into tiny bits of information called data packs. With all the packets being delivered from several different routes over the Internet, these need to be packaged into one group and delivered to a Transmission Control Protocol that will put the data in proper order. Internet Protocol’s function is to deliver the packets to the Transmission Control Protocol.
If your computer is setup on a network with multiple computers you will have a subnet mask that identify what group of computers you are part of on the network. You also have a default gateway that handles traffic your from your local network to the Internet. This information can be entered manually if you know the correct address or can be obtained automatically if the computer has the correct permissions.
Internet Protocol is not perfect as sending data packets with no central monitoring or control system for tracking and maintaining what is sent across the Internet can lead to data loss. This can cause problems such as the data becomes corrupt, packets can get lost, duplicate packets received and the packets received in the wrong order. While there is no way to completely remove the chance of errors occurring in date transmission, some of the newer protocol being introduced will help improve matters some what. Version 6, the latest version of the protocol has a new method of sending and receiving packets. Not only will it offer speed increases it will also keep the packets in proper order. Version 6 will take over version 4 as the main Internet Protocol used around the world as nearly all the address on the older version 4 protocol have reached the theoretical maximum.
The use of Internet Protocol is not only for the transfer of pure data anymore. The Voice over Internet Protocol, also know as VoIP, is used to give the ability to transmit sound over the Internet. The way this works is VoIP takes the sound and converts it into digital format to transfer it across the Internet and then changes it back to a normal telephone signal when it reaches its destination. If you are using your computer you just need to have the proper software to be able to use VoIP. If you want to use a traditional telephone you will need to have an adapter that can translate VoIP data. You can also buy an IP telephone that looks and works like a traditional telephone but connect to your computer instead of a phone jack.
